ENGINEER, ESI INTERN

The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) has two (2) openings for Electric Engineer Intern(s) in our Electric Systems Integrity Department, located in Lansing, MI.

Position Summary:

Job Type: Full-Time Summer Internship

Dates: May 06, 2024 - August 02, 2024

Pay Rate: $21.00 per hour.

  • Electric System Integrity is responsible for engineering, designing and problem solving for the Electric Utility transmission, substation, and distribution assets of BWL.
  • Potential projects include system load flow planning, protection and coordination studies, electrical equipment review and specifications, overhead pole line and underground cable design, and substation control projects.
  • The ESI Intern will also help with material specifications, system planning studies for the BWL’s Strategic Plan, and system improvement sketches including voltage cut overs.
  • The ESI Intern will learn from, and be supervised by, a mentor of the Electric Systems Integrity Department.


Essential Functions:

Interns will work on a variety of projects that span the T&D system including:

  • Transmission, overhead and underground distribution.
  • Construction and Material Standards, Compliance, and Planning.
  • Interns should expect to do tasks such as writing specifications for materials, performing engineering analysis, writing reports, working with data sets in excel, and generally learning about the construction and operation of the T&D system Aid in Transmission and Distribution Planning activities that tie into the Immediate and Long-Range Plan.
    • Assist with Design, Implementation, and Material procurement for projects. (Pole Replacements, Conductor Sizing, Voltage Conversions, and other system improvements).
    • Aid Substation Engineering and Construction Groups in maintenance activities. (Equipment Specifications, Process Test Results, Control Settings, and other substation related activities).
    • Investigate and Specify materials needed on the LBWL Electric System.
  • Required to follow BWL Safety Manual and wear personal protective equipment for all field work.
  • Attends training and safety awareness and/or skills improvement as required by the BWL or government agency such as MIOSHA.
  • Expected to comply with all BWL policies and work rules.
  • Predictable and reliable attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.


Job Specifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a program with a focus of Engineering at an educational institute and with junior or senior status during the summer of 2024.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.


Physical Requirements / Working Conditions:

  • Employees are required to follow the BWL Safety Manual and wear required personal protective equipment, adhere to BWL safety rules and regulations, attend all training for safety awareness or skills improvement as required by supervisor, BWL, or governmental agency such as MIOSHA.
  • Normal office and occasional field work.
  • Field conditions may include heat, cold, dust, and/or noise.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus, especially due to concentration on a computer screen and small numbers.
  • Must successfully complete a background check, a substance screening and a physical (if applicable).
